FUNERAL HOME Dial 327-4127 331 EAST MAIN STREET ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA "'Your Golden Rule Funeral Home" The Herald, Monday, August 28, 1989-5A Blacks protesting teen's killing taunted NEW YORK (AP) Dozens of whites in a Brooklyn community where a black teen-ager was slain angrily taunted about 100 people who marched through the streets Sunday to protest the death. The protesters, led by clergy members, gathered in the Bensonhurst neighborhood where 16-yearold Yusef Hawkins was shot dead Wednesday as he was confronted by a gang of bat-wielding whites.

The group of about 30 blacks and 70 whites was escorted by 20 police on motorcycles and dozens more on foot as about 300 white residents lined the street. Many residents watched passively from windows and storefronts while others walked along the street waving posters in the air and chanting, "Go home. Go home." Some residents shouted, "Free the boys from Bensonhurst," a reference to five white youths who have been arrested in the slaying. Others booed the marchers and chanted "Central Park, Central Park," referring to the recent rape and beating of a white jogger there, allegedly by a gang of blacks and Hispanics. Some made obscene gestures.

One man was taken into custody but not immediately charged after a small firecracker was thrown at the demonstrators, said Sgt. Ed Burns, a police spokesman. The protesters chanted, "Whose city? Our city," as they walked about 10 blocks from the site of the killing through the community's streets. "New York City is not going to become Johannesburg, South Africa. This is our city and we are going to walk wherever we want.

We need to see more of the good people in this community," ell said at the site of Hawkins' death. Throughout the march, police blocked streets with barricades to prevent confrontations. Hawkins and three friends were attacked by a gang of neighborhood whites carrying baseball bats, twoby-fours and golf clubs when they arrived in Brooklyn's mostly Italian-Jewish Bensonhurst section to answer an advertisem*nt for a used car. Police said the gang was angered by a local white girl's dating of a black youth, and they gathered with the intention of attacking the black when he arrived for the girl's birthday party. A protest march Saturday afternoon by blacks through the mostly white neighborhood was greeted with jeers, spitting and racial slurs.

Some whites held up watermelons as 300 or so blacks marched through. Residents also chanted "Central Park, Central Park" during that incident. The blacks answered with "Howard Beach, Howard Beach," a reference to the December 1986 killing of Michael Griffith, 23. is about what we' expected," said Joseph Calzerano, the police department's chief of operations. "The feelings are running high." "If we didn't do it because of what happened yesterday then it would be just like South Africa," Mitchell said before a brief memorial service at the site of the killing Sunday.

Continued from page 1A The EPA study released last week is a final installment in a 10-year national acid rain assessment program. Researchers at EPA's environmental research laboratory in Corvallis, made 50-year projections of the impact of acid rain on watershed quality i in three areas the Southern Blue Ridge mountains, the Northeast and the mid-Appalachian region. In the Blue Ridge mountains, the researchers studied 35 streams and watersheds that were selected as representative of about 1,300 streams in the region. They calculated the effect on the streams of continued sulfur emissions for the next 50 years at the same level as today, as well as the effect of increasing sulfur emissions by 20 percent beginning in 10 years and continuing for 15 years, then keeping that level of emissions constant for the next 25 years. At the increased level of emissions, the study estimated that 159 streams would become acidic within the next 50 years and 340 streams would become potentially suscepti- decimation of blacks by crack," LeRoy Johnson, 44, who was among the people, most of them blacks, who waited quietly to attend the daylong wake.

Currently, there are no streams in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains that are considered acidic and only three are estimated to have an acid neutralizing capacity of less than 50 micro-equivalents per liter. lOVER 200 PIANOS BUY or RENT As Low As $29 MO.
